About Puglia and Matera

Puglia and Matera are Italy's sun-baked south: whitewashed towns, trulli and olive groves, long Adriatic beaches, and the ancient cave city of Matera in the rock.

About Puglia & Matera

Puglia is the sunlit heel of Italy, a long region of olive groves, whitewashed hilltowns, and 2 coastlines running from the Gargano promontory in the north to the tip of the Salento in the south. At its heart are the trulli of the Valle d'Itria and the masserie, the fortified stone farmhouses that are now among the finest places to stay in the south, while just across the border in Basilicata sits Matera, the ancient cave city carved from the rock. Long overlooked by international visitors, Puglia is rich in coast, food, and history.

How to Get to Puglia and Matera

Bari Airport (Karol Wojtyła / BRI) is the primary gateway for the north and center of the region, approximately 10km / 6 miles from Bari, roughly 15 minutes by car. It is the most convenient arrival point for the Valle d'Itria (Alberobello is approximately 70km / 43 miles away, roughly 1.25 hours by car) and for Matera (approximately 65km / 40 miles, roughly 1.25 hours).

Brindisi Airport (Salento / BDS) is the gateway for the south, well placed for Ostuni (approximately 40km / 25 miles, roughly 45 minutes by car), the lower Valle d'Itria, and the Salento, with Lecce approximately 45km / 28 miles away, roughly 45 minutes.

Both airports connect through Rome, Milan, and the major European hubs; there are no direct intercontinental flights, so most guests from North America arrive on a connecting flight. Trains from Rome and the north reach Bari and Lecce, but a car is essential for the countryside, the coast, and the hilltowns.

Where to go in Puglia and Matera

Bari and the northern coast
Bari, the regional capital, has a walled old town, Bari Vecchia, where women still make orecchiette by hand in the street, and a seafront that rewards an evening stroll. South of Bari, the clifftop town of Polignano a Mare and the harbor town of Monopoli are among the most photographed spots on the coast.

The Valle d'Itria and the trulli
The green limestone valley between Bari and the Salento is the heart of Puglia and the base most guests choose. It is trulli country, home to the conical drystone houses concentrated around Alberobello (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the setting for a string of white hilltowns: Locorotondo, Cisternino, and Martina Franca, each with a compact historic center and a strong local table. The countryside in between is dense with masserie, the fortified farmhouses that have become the region's signature places to stay.

Ostuni and the masseria coast
Ostuni, the “White City,” rises above the coastal plain in a maze of narrow white lanes and anchors the region's most desirable stretch of countryside. Between the town and the sea, around Fasano and Savelletri, is the greatest concentration of luxury masserie in Puglia, along with the Roman site of Egnazia and a coastline of rocky coves and beach clubs.

Lecce and the Baroque south
Lecce, often called the “Florence of the South,” is one of Italy's great Baroque cities, built from a soft golden stone that carves like butter; the facades of Santa Croce and the Piazza del Duomo are among the most elaborate in the country. It is a lively university town with a serious food and café culture, and the natural base for exploring the Salento peninsula.

The Salento coast
The Salento is the tip of the heel, where the Adriatic and Ionian seas meet. The Adriatic side, around Otranto and the cliffs to the south, is dramatic and clear; the Ionian side, around Gallipoli and Porto Cesareo, has softer sand and shallow water. At the very bottom, Santa Maria di Leuca marks the meeting of the 2 seas. The interior is scattered with Baroque towns, olive groves, and the summer pizzica music festivals that define Salento nights.

Matera
Just across the regional border in Basilicata, Matera is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements on earth. Its 2 Sassi districts, a warren of cave dwellings, rock churches, and stone lanes carved into a ravine, were once a symbol of southern poverty and are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Italy's most remarkable places to stay, with many of the caves converted into hotels and restaurants. It sits roughly 1 hour from the Valle d'Itria and is easily woven into a Puglia itinerary.

When to go in Puglia and Matera

The best month to visit Puglia and Matera depends on what you are looking for, but May through early October are generally the strongest.

Spring is lovely and green: April and May bring wildflowers, warm days, and a sea beginning to warm, with the towns quiet and the masserie at their most relaxed. Summer is the high season: July and August are hot, and the coast and hilltowns fill with Italian vacationers, though the beach clubs, long dinners, and pizzica festivals are the region at its liveliest and the masseria pools come into their own. September and early October are ideal: the sea stays warm well into autumn, the olive harvest begins, and the summer crowds thin out. November through March is quiet, with many coastal properties and restaurants closed for the season, though Lecce, Bari, and Matera remain rewarding throughout the year and the countryside stays green and mild.

Why Visit Puglia and Matera

What sets Puglia apart is the masseria itself: a fortified stone farmhouse, often centuries old, of a kind you will not find elsewhere in Italy. From a single one, a guest can reach 2 seas, the trulli of Alberobello, the Baroque of Lecce, and the cave city of Matera inside 1 to 2 hours, then return each evening to olive groves, a pool cut into the rock, and some of the warmest hospitality in the country. Much of the coast fills in high summer, but the region as a whole still feels genuinely lived-in rather than given over to tourism, and the season runs comfortably from spring into October.

The table is one of the region's great pleasures. Puglia is one of the most productive agricultural areas in the Mediterranean and produces a large share of Italy's olive oil, and its cooking reflects that abundance: orecchiette with turnip tops, burrata from Andria, taralli, sweet local vegetables, and some of the finest seafood in the country along both coastlines. The wines are bold and increasingly serious, led by Primitivo and Negroamaro, while Matera contributes its own ancient bread and dishes aged in the caves of the Sassi.

In Puglia and Matera, Essenza Escapes handles the parts of a trip that are hard to reach from the outside: private stays in the region's finest masserie, boat days along the Adriatic and Ionian coasts, olive oil tastings and harvest visits at working estates, orecchiette and burrata lessons with local cooks, and private guides through the Sassi of Matera and the Baroque of Lecce. The masseria owners, cooks, and boatmen in the Essenza Escapes network are people the team has worked with for years, and that history shows in the access guests receive.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time of year to visit Puglia for a villa holiday?

May through early October are the strongest months, with warm days and a sea that holds its heat well into autumn. July and August are hot and lively, when the beach clubs, long dinners, and pizzica festivals are at their best, though the coast and hilltowns are at their busiest. Spring brings wildflowers and quiet towns, while the olive harvest gets under way in the fall, and Lecce, Bari, and Matera stay rewarding throughout the year. Whatever the season, Essenza Escapes can match the timing to what you most want from the trip.

Which airports serve Puglia, and how far are they from the villas?

Bari Airport (BRI) is the most convenient for the north and center of the region, roughly 1.25 hours from the Valle d'Itria and about the same from Matera. Brindisi Airport (BDS) is better placed for the south, around 45 minutes from Ostuni and from Lecce. Both connect through Rome, Milan, and the major European hubs, as there are no direct intercontinental flights. Essenza Escapes can arrange private transfers from any of these airports.

Do I need a car to explore Puglia?

Yes, a car is essential for almost all Puglia villa stays. The masserie, trulli towns, coastal coves, and Matera are spread across the countryside and not well connected by public transport, and much of the pleasure of the region lies in driving the quiet roads between olive groves and white hilltowns. Towns like Lecce, Ostuni, and Matera are best explored on foot once you arrive, and a private driver is a popular choice for guests who would rather not drive. Essenza Escapes can arrange car hire or a private driver from any Italian airport.

Where should I base myself in Puglia, and can I combine it with Matera?

Most guests visiting for the first time base themselves in the Valle d'Itria or the countryside around Ostuni, within 1 hour of the trulli towns, the coast, and the greatest concentration of masserie. The Salento, farther south around Lecce, suits guests drawn to Baroque towns and the beaches where the Adriatic and Ionian meet, though it is a longer transfer from Bari. Matera pairs easily with either base, roughly 1 hour from the Valle d'Itria, and many guests add a night in a cave hotel there as part of the trip. Essenza Escapes will always discuss where to base you, and whether to split your stay, before recommending specific properties.

Which is the best coast in Puglia for beaches, the Adriatic or the Ionian?

Worth knowing first: although Puglia looks like a coastal region on all sides, very few masserie sit on the beach or offer sea views. They are old farm properties, set slightly inland among the olive groves, and the real advantage of that position is reach. From most bases, the nearest beach is a 10 to 30 minute drive, and both coastlines are within roughly 2 hours, so guests can choose their sea by the day rather than being tied to one. The Adriatic side, around Polignano a Mare, Monopoli, and Ostuni, is largely rocky, with deep coves, sea caves, and beach clubs built into the cliffs. The Ionian side of the Salento, around Gallipoli and Porto Cesareo, has the soft white sand and shallow, clear water that draw families. Essenza Escapes can arrange private boat days on either coast, which is often the finest way to reach the quietest coves.

Is Puglia a good destination for food and wine, and what can Essenza Escapes arrange?

Puglia is one of Italy's great food regions, from the olive oil that fills its groves to the orecchiette, burrata, and seafood that define the local table, all at prices that still surprise visitors. Essenza Escapes can arrange olive oil tastings and harvest visits at working estates, private cooking lessons with local cooks, and dinners at masserie that do not open to outside guests. The wines are increasingly serious, led by the bold Primitivo and Negroamaro of the Salento, and private estate visits are easy to organize. For guests who add Matera, a guided walk through the Sassi paired with a cave dinner is a memorable close to any trip.
